HOLLY BLACK

Holly Black Helps You Solve Your Plot Problems Today

“The majority of questions I get about stories relate to plot. How do we choose what happens and in what order? What if we know the characters really well but don’t know how to structure a story involving them? What do middles do? How to we bring stories to a conclusion? Since fairy tales are entirely plot-driven, with minimal characterization, they can make for useful models. Come break down the structure of fairy tales together and create retellings that contain the shape and resonance of the original, but which feel fresh and new.”

INGER JOHANNE SYVERUD

Introduction to Seid

In Norse mythology there were witches, known as norns, who spun the thread of life, not just for humans, but also for the gods. Life was something that was spun: a lace or rope that one could send on the way and one that could be manipulated. There are theories that Seid seems to be the act of spinning, sending, attracting and manipulating this spirit line. Through sources, theories, different experiences and practices we will gain a greater understanding of how Seid can be used as a spiritual tool.

Seid is a practice in northern magic that has a clear resemblance to shamanism. It can be used to work with the lifelines, achieve visions, healing, and divine insights. Seid is performed intuitively through song that sends the seer into trance There are two main types of seid: power and divination. These two can be further divided into two subgroups, eneseid and group Seid. The Seid is performed alone while group Seid is performed by 1-3 vølver or skretter on behalf of all participants. Here you will be able to achieve a broader understanding of how to use the Seid in modern times and to develop your own skills more easily.

SESSION I

Inger will present sources, theories, different experiences and practices to gain a greater understanding of how Seid can be used as a spiritual tool with a short singing-voice introduction that can be used in a Seid.

SESSION II

Building on Session 1, Inger will be present different techniques and forms that can be used to exert Seid and perform a full Seid ceremony.

French, Crime Scene Supervisor for the Baltimore Police Department will offer a demonstration of real-life crime scene techniques and how they are used to solve crimes gearing this presentation toward young children and present the subject in a kid-friendly way. It starts with an explanation of the basic principle of forensic science in a way that children can understand – playing in the mud, eating chocolate cake, etc. It then discusses firearms identification, DNA, and fingerprints. The first subject stresses gun safety (what to do if you find a gun), the second involves turning candy into a DNA molecule, and the last gives everyone a chance to get a little messy.
