EINAR SELVIK

Runes and Secrets

Since the first rune masters started to carve their charged signs thousands of years ago, the runes has always had a strong symbolic value and has always gone hand in hand with knowledge and insights of some sort, often esoteric. Besides being a writing system the mythology speaks of the runes as knowledge of divine origin – reginkunnr. In this workshop Einar Selvik will speak about Runes, the history of their lore as well as the nature of their mystic sides in accordance with various historical source material.

Northern Esoteric Arts

The will serve as an introduction and guide through the vast and fragmented historical sources on northern esoteric arts. The main focus will be on the subjects; Runes, Galdr and Seidr, and on the many ideas and concepts that sets the base for understanding how they interact and work, both in their ancient and contemporary state.

Finding Your Inner Strength Through Voice

I used to be extremely shy. Many people think that they can not sing although they want to, for this very reason. However, shy people often are very aware of energies around them and this is really a gift when it comes to singing. In this workshop, we will also explore fearless, loud singing where you are projecting your thoughts out in the Universe. Everyone is welcome, with no singing experience required.

Swords and Violence: Adding action to fiction (and Demo)

Novels need action, but that action should be a logical part of the story. Join New York Times bestseller author Melissa Marr as she covers some standard historical weapons, an overview of Historical European Martial Arts, and how to incorporate swords and violence into your fiction. Female competitive German longsword practitioner Dagi Johnson (from Virginia Academy of Fencing) will be joining Melissa for demonstration. Authentic longsword, staff, rapier and dagger will be on hand. The workshop will focus on accurate representation of fight, but attendees will have time to check out the weapons.

Whistle Basics

Students will learn how to hold the instrument and learn a two octave scale. Learn the note names and also how to pick up a tune by ear. Class includes an import whistle or $25 off a Carbon professional whistle. Students may bring their own whistle in the key of D.

Beginning Irish Whistle and Intro to Flute and/or Low Whistle

Fey Conjure: Making Simple Magic with a Bit of String, some Wilted Leaves

Candy Magic

Many of the Fair Folk love sweeties—the stickier the better.  This is a fun and very new magical system for both blessings (worts) and banes and it all revolves around retro candies.  Root beer barrels, Cinnamon Red Hots, bon-bons, gummi worms—we’ll play with the techniques and sample the candies.

Finding The Other Realms Under Suburbia

We all dream of misty woods and meadows of fireflies but many of us live in the concrete forests of urban America.  How can we access the wildwood

from a third floor apartment? Do land spirits visit window boxes on fire escapes?  Does a manicured city park contain any real magic?  The answer

is a joyful “yes!” Come and learn the secrets of crossing the borders in a world with asphalt pathways and springs of recycled water.

CYNDI SHATTLER

Cobweb Felted Scarves

Gossamer  hand dyed wool fibers will be used in this class to create wet felted one of a kind art scarves. We will discuss the traditional applications of felting  and the magical transformation from hair to fabric.  Anyone can feel comfortable in this low stress form of wet felting. All supplies and tools  will be provided in class.

Dreadful Hair Forests

You will learn to transform hand dyed wool fibers by wet felting them into dreadlocks. Create your own hair forest to wear for the day or longer. We will discuss the different ancient cultures that  used woolen locks to adorn their hair from the Greeks to modern day . I will talk about temporary installation  and more permanent ways of wearing your locks. Make your dread forest in class and wear it that night , fun new costume piece or a  new hair style for longer.

JOHN L FRENCH

CSI: Tír na nÓg

John L. French is a 40 year veteran of the Crime Scene Unit of the Baltimore Police Department’s Forensic Services and Evidence Management Division with over 37 years of crime scene experience. In this workshop, Mr. French will apply his forensic training and experience to fantasy settings, explaining how forensic techniques and procedures investigations could work in the worlds of magic and fairies where the principles of science do not always apply. The workshop will consist of a discussion using examples from the mundane work then applying them to a fantasy setting. For example, are the structures of faerie wings unique to each faerie much the same way that fingerprints are with humans? If so, a piece of broken wing could be identified to a particular fae, even if the wing healed. During the workshop, Mr. French will take questions from the participants regarding specific scenarios they may have read about, considered, or plan to write about. There will be hands-on involvement consisting of instruction in developing latent prints and the taking of ink prints along with samples of ammunition components, tools used for the collection of DNA from crime scenes and gunshot residue samples from shooting suspects.

DARLA HITCHCOCK

New Writers Workshop

Through a series of prompts, exercises, worksheets and images, published poet Ms. Hitchcock will show students how to begin to write a fantasy story. Characterization, setting, world-building and dialogue will be discussed, as well as proper manuscript formatting. At the end of the workshop students can expect to have completed the beginning of a short story, or the first draft of a short-short story. If there is time, students who wish to will read their work to the class. At the very least Ms. Hitchcock will take copies of student’s stories to critique, giving them valuable insight as to how they can improve and expand upon what they have already written.

REGINA ANNE

Sacred Ritual Movement and Dance

Before spoken or written word we shared our stories through body language and dance expression. Sacred Fusion Belly Dance weaves the world of Middle Eastern dance and the ancient voice of storytelling into a personal sacred journey of soul expression. In this workshop we will dive deeply into the magical elements of water, fire, air, earth and spirit, and set clear intentions for manifestation by way of eloquent ritual movement and ceremony. You will learn an engaging choreography to take with you for inspiration in creating your on-going journey in Sacred Dance. This is a physical class, please dress prepared to stretch and move. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it for your comfort.  Regina Anne is a Sacred Fusion Dancer who has been practicing, performing, and teaching this inspirational dance form for almost 20 years.
